Dénes Wächter

Filet

for the opening of the exhibition titled

He creates almost uniquely Hungarian post‑pop, post‑op art style paintings by colliding and weaving motifs, figures, patterns and styles from the most varied contexts. Without prejudice, he draws on memories of the high‑profile and popular art of his childhood, balancing them with later layers of paint that give a more intellectual adult texture. In the style he possesses, pop‑art humour and irony mingle with an op‑art sensory‑disrupting illusionism, the decorative figuration characteristic of domestic painting of the 90s, and the Dada collage technique.

No stop.

His work is characterised by tolerance. By painting side by side he elevates the American pin‑up girl, the Röltex-Pannit, the NDK sewing machine, the Baroque putti, the Christian Sun Symbol and the macabre ornamentation to an equal rank. Just as images, ideas and memories preserved on the surface or beneath the mind do not separate themselves, Wächter’s pictures likewise playfully overlap, mingle and melt together, the various figures blending together. His images can therefore be read as psychological states and reflect a distinctly turn‑of‑the‑century, collage‑like intellectual condition.
