Szurcsik József: Mi van az űrben?

The Godot Gallery respectfully invites you.

József Szurcsik

What’s happening in space?

for the opening of the titled exhibition

Opening: on the evening of March 14 at 8 o’clock.

One of the most frequently exhibited and highly acclaimed artists – Derkovits, Román Academy, Munkácsy – is unveiling his latest works. In the void, a staircase and a rhythmic line of cube‑steps drift. Gigantic chocolate bars whirl towards the radiant sun. The heavens glitter in colours never before seen.

After probing the nature of power, human relationships, and the souls of people and objects, the artist’s focus shifts to the study of Hungarian space. What lies in the void? – and in the works of József Szurcsik. Spaceships entwined with their astronauts, or celestial bodies merged with their inhabitants, could be among them, as could be thinking meteorites, protective or threatening asteroids. Constellations that have followed humanity’s progress, UFOs, or the architectures of the future. Perhaps it is all of these, or perhaps not.

On the monumental surfaces of 140 × 180 cm, the geometric motifs known from his earlier works—mutated forms bearing human faces—materialise, floating, lining up, soaring through infinite space. The striking, harsh colours in cool‑warm, dark‑light contrast strain the compositions, confronting the fiction far removed from science. What is in space? – it questions itself day after day. We look for familiar, recognisable things even in space; science searches for life, hoping to discover something akin to earthly matters there.

It may well be that what we hope for in space, based on our earthly desires, is there; it may also be that in space we discover what we find inside our own human souls – exciting, richly filled worlds – and perhaps even that space itself resides within our spirit…

The exhibition is open until March 6, 2001.
