Noble Nikolett’s earlier works were characterised by areas charged with tensions on the borders between the artificial and the human, the appearance‑reality and the actual reality. Harsh gestures and sensitivity, tragedy and irony in a particular mixture defined her painterly toolkit.

His new works were inspired by a visit to a small animal cemetery in Lisbon, and the strange spirit of the site strongly shapes the world of the two series now on display. The images lead into an intimate, more secluded but no less ambivalent world than before. The necropolis assembled from them, simultaneously haunting and provoking a smile, is clearly not about life itself but rather the realm of memories abandoned by life. The artist records the experience of loss and ruin without evading irony. It is precisely this combination – the almost tool‑less depiction, the gently tinged humour in the tragedy, and the artistic authenticity that legitimises the daring choice of subject – that makes Nemes Nikolett’s new work unique.
