Erotikus grafika

We cordially invite 2001 to attend the opening of the Hungarian Graphic Artists Union’s group exhibition “Erotika”, a curated collection, on 25 April at 19.

In the value and emotional confusion that had settled by the beginning of the third millennium, the deluge of erotica intended solely for consumption increasingly makes clear that good‑quality erotic art, aesthetic standards, and compositions with a unique tone are lacking.

The first erotic graphic exhibition after the system change – held in 1991 at the Árkád Gallery – still in some respects tried to free itself from the limits of the socialist moral and artistic outlook. Over the ten years that followed, however, market forces, trade and the media in our country took hold of the areas of erotica and sexuality that had previously been treated as taboos, and today it is not the prudishness of the social climate but the sex trade, pornography and violence that pose a danger to “healthy erotica”. For this reason the second erotic graphic exhibition, rather than simply addressing the earlier deficiency, now seeks value and meaning within one of the fundamental forms of human relationship, amid a deluge of abundance in the wrong sense.

The work submitted to the exhibition, both in tone and in its formal technical approach, reflects the diversity of contemporary art, further enriched by a variety of individual attitudes towards the subject. Some are drawn to traditional image types, while others are able to employ the latest computer techniques, and even the austere language of minimalism, in an erotic context.

Surely this cabinet‑style exhibition could not undertake a complete survey of erotic graphic art, but at least it dared ask: does it even exist any more?
