The young painter’s second exhibition is being held at the Godot Gallery. In the show that presents her latest works, we encounter feelings similar to those of the first. Rather than focus on the obvious, readily apparent matters and offer trendy responses to trendy events, Bács Emese turns her attention to a world we thought had already disappeared. Those who do not live within it (because it has nothing to do with them), and those who do, try hard to look far away from it. This is the eternal suburb. Even the underground passage beneath Kálvin Square is a suburb in Bács Emese’s pictures.

The images, in fact, have nothing to do with politics, or even with social sensitivity; from the outset there is literally nothing at all. Yet, even in the strongest works, it is the figure being thrust, by fate or misfortune, into the city—into that hard‑to‑pin down, hard‑to‑penetrate, oppressive, brutal‑wall‑encircled setting—who is portrayed. It is striking that this theme must become such a decisive reality for a young man. Bács Emese wants to paint what truly occupies her mind, not what she might have been tempted to paint these days, which would mean she does not use a computer, does not manipulate the visual, and does not wave the banner of post‑feminism.

On his canvases we only encounter colours and forms of an exceptionally rich palette, but perhaps it is more precise to speak of masses. His images seem to maintain a kinship with the classical avant‑garde cubism and with the urban visual world steeped in expressionism, as well as with the dominant stream of domestic and international painting of the eighties, which once again returned to the painter what was his.
