The Godot Gallery is a major player and exhibition venue in contemporary Hungarian visual art. We consider building international relationships, introducing Hungarian artists abroad, and presenting foreign artists at home to be of utmost importance. Our aim is to create international opportunities for Hungarian contemporary artists and to be part of European art events.
This framework incorporates the collaboration between Godot Gallery and Berlin's Galerie sphn, which began 2002 of November with an exhibition by painter József Baksai. The opening was hosted by the Hungarian ambassador to Berlin and the director of Haus Ungarn. Thanks to the exhibition’s success, Hans Schüle will be displayed at Godot Gallery in September. Our plans see our cooperation continuing with joint participation at major art fairs during the 2004 year, preparations of which are already underway (FIAC Paris, Kunstmesse Köln).
We consider the collaboration between the two galleries to be very important, because our achievements so far have been realised on our own initiative, on a private basis, without any state funding. It matters to us that our initiative fits into the network that links Berlin and Budapest, and their twin‑city cooperation.
Hans Schüle, who studied painting and sculpture at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and Berlin HdK from 1991 to 1996, completed his master’s studies in 1997 under Professor Jürgen Reipka. In 2000 he was awarded the International Workshop Prize of the Erich Hauser Art Foundation. In 2001 he unveiled his first major public sculpture (Hídszobrok, Neckarsulm). In 2002 he had a solo exhibition at the Swiss Wil Art Hall. In 2003 he took part in the Stockholm Art Fair and Art Frankfurt international fairs on behalf of the Berlin sphn Gallery. Within this international exhibition series he will exhibit in September at the Godot Gallery.
