The NYÍLT TÉR artist village has been operating in Mezőszemerén since 2001. Its concept is to bring artists from a range of visual arts, from painting to intermedia, together. The organisers are also open to inviting artists of different ages, as they consider bridging generational gaps to be important. They give special attention to ensuring that, at each occasion, Hungarian artists from beyond the border also travel to the creative camp. From the talented, freshly graduated young artists to the arriving ones, spanning generations, the artist village strives to provide ever better creative conditions for its invitees. Over the years, the number of visual artists working in the town has approached one hundred and fifty, because it is also vital that every year different artists come to the creative house in the village centre. Year on year it becomes evident how sensitively the artists here respond to the surrounding world – namely the village itself, its inhabitants and its built heritage. A particularly important phenomenon is that participants do not work in isolation, but instead create while walking around the village, forging human connections through painting, filming and photographing, thereby becoming, even if only briefly, members of the village community. From the village’s perspective, an important benefit of the artist village is that several properties have already been bought in the town, and many of the visual artists have settled there, living and creating. The artistic directors of the artist village are Bukta Imre, a Munkácsy‑Award-winning visual artist and head lecturer at the Magyar Képzőművészeti Egyetem; Szirtes János, a Munkácsy‑Award‑winning visual artist and chair of the Department of the Moholy‑Nagy Művészeti Egyetem; and Kónya Réka, director of the artist village. All three are members of the Mezőszemerei Civil Egyesület, which provides the organisational framework for the creation of artist villages.
