It feels to me as though Péter Ujházi is creating the whole universe… for us. He blurs and stretches the boundaries between imagination and reality so that we realise we need not always pin them down sharply. Grotesque, irony and surrealism all aid this marvelously playful tool. With childlike sensitivity and ancient naivety he depicts the world and the All. Everyday scenes or festive moods, constant motion or emerging forms, the infinite “spirit”, the unfinished images, the small ceramics, the large sculptures, and even the boxes all point to the fact that we are all actors – a great work, life is organic and indispensable, yet we are only tiny parts. Centrality and asymmetry, the real and the unreal are opposed, yet they cannot exist without one another. They evoke emotions, even though Ujházi does not aim for lyrical abstraction; emotions do not appear directly, yet somehow they still stir and engage each work we behold. The narrative tone is at once figurative and abstract, wild and gentle, fine and brutal… Contrasts like life itself, yet endless harmony and teaching flow, no matter what material is approached. It makes you think, it makes you laugh, it makes you feel. Somehow it is not, yet it is – personally, as a mediator who uses himself to convey to us. I can only look at them separately, yet they are woven together with his landscape painting and his other works as one fabric. The leaf paintings… I cannot describe them without bias, but I think they are perfect… if such exists. – Jakab Bori
