Szikora Tamás, Tamás
Tamás - Válogatás Rátfai Attila gyűjteményének Szikora Tamás képeiből 2021.05.19 - 06.12.
Opening: 2021 On 19 May at 18, the event will be opened by Nagy Gábor György, visual artist, and Tóth Ádám. Szikora Tamás is one of Hungary’s most significant figures in neoconstruktivism, a Munkácsy Award‑winner in the visual arts. His early expressionist canvases were inspired by Antoni Clavé, and over time he shed figurative representation in favour of abstract modes of depiction. The distinctive pencil drawings of the 1980 years anticipate an entirely new spatial‑creation concept: playful engagement with material and radical re‑construction of multilayered, glued surfaces. The breadth of his art is achieved through a comfortable synthesis of varied techniques—drawing, painting, and installing works of wood and hungarocell. A pivotal turn in his creative practice occurred in 1982, when he discovered his plastic trademark, the box, which from then on dominated his paintings and installations. One of his most famous box installations was shown at the São Paolo Art Biennale in 1987. Since the 90 years his painterly self has become more pronounced. Primarily concerned with spatiality, the multifaceted evocation of space often drives his work, underpinned by robust colour harmonies, divergent pictorial forms, and uniquely processed frames that together realise a complex artistic logic in the Szikora style. Szikora’s boxes, chests, drawers and chests are not meant to conceal the world; on the contrary, they point to the limits of material reality while rejecting the direct mystery and intimacy of functional object culture. Those seemingly weightless boxes, cast in their own shadow, despite expert material manipulation, still hint at emptiness and longing—evoked by the dominant black‑brown palette and the gloomy, dark tones. Beyond metaphor, one must see these pure geometries as simply masking themselves; it seems Szikora, intentionally reducing the connections behind his works, wishes to give voice to the visual world created by the overall picture in his own secluded manner. The exhibition’s material comes from a close friend of the painter’s collection, aiming to present the artist’s chosen works from an emotional‑intuitive perspective. The show will run until 12 June, from Wednesday to Friday 10 and 14, and on Saturday between 10 and 13.
