Understanding and re‑reading signs, symbols and traces drives culture and civilisation. Even the most fundamental systems – such as language – continually encounter the limits of interpretation, because the meanings assigned to individual signs cannot be fixed definitively; the environment and the subject constantly reinterpret and transform them. In her most recent works, Katalin Verebics expands the conventional scope of signs. What meaning could there be in something that human intellect has not produced, yet is not merely endowed with standardised content? Katalin Verebics foregrounds the microcosm of material signs within this domain.
