Since moving back to Mezőszemeré, Bukta Imre has taken the village that portrays the fringes of Hungarian society as the theme of his paintings. In his works, rising above a social‑status report, he presents his viewers with various human life experiences and a sort of witchy, mysterious, inward‑facing world.

Its visual style is grounded in a painterly re‑thinking of perception, thereby filling everyday scenes with additional layers of meaning. The everyday objects are recognisable, yet the work employs strange, surreal, often unidentifiable, snapshot‑like motifs that appear as colour swaths, bubbles or repeating tiny patterns. This explains why Bukta Imre’s paintings, which evoke village life on the periphery, are not merely instruments of social sensitisation: they do not pass judgement or moralise. For him, rural existence is neither good nor bad, boring, suffering‑laden or idyllic; it is simply what it is—a way of life that many people today still experience as a daily routine. In Bukta Imre’s art, that attitude steers clear of an over‑romanticised, idealised portrayal of village life. His depictions comfortably place garbage, disorder, an unkempt street scene and a well‑kept village house side by side, together with the community spaces of rural life that pursue beauty while retaining an eclectic, flashy quality. The subjects of the pieces on display now extend into new territory, but whatever they portray, his work always concerns the human.
