A defining moment in an artist’s journey, when a work first steps out of the studio. It is displayed on the wall of a real exhibition space, a stranger visitor stops before it, and the question rings out: who made this?

Talent alone does not yet create an audience, professional connections or a livelihood. For an emerging creator to become visible, someone has to first give them space and trust.

Since the Godot Art Expo 2016, this has served as an entry point for young artists. The event has been curated from its very start by Laczkovich Borbála, the artistic director of the Godot Contemporary Art Institute, who for a decade has been watching how first introductions develop into independent artistic careers.

"Supporting young artists is not a favour, but a shared responsibility: when we give them space, we are actually deciding which thoughts and viewpoints will find their way into the culture of the future" – says Laczkovich Borbála.

What makes Art Expo distinctive is that it pairs together those who are showing themselves to a larger audience for the very first time, and those who once started out here but have now become recognised leaders in the country’s contemporary art scene.

But what happens after the first exhibition? How can a talented undergraduate or recent graduate become a long‑term artist?

This will be discussed by Laczkovich Borbála and Dóczi Gergely, the chancellor of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, at the press event on 6 October. As part of the collaboration, the MKE JumpSTART programme will appear at this year’s Expo with its own curation and as an independent exhibition unit.

At Godot, we are also curious about how we choose art when the artist's name, notoriety or the price of the work do not influence us. This is the foundation of the institution's latest digital development, ARTCRUSH.

ARTCRUSH playfully brings contemporary art closer – with effortless scrolling you can immerse yourself in the pieces and, along the way, discover how the works speak to you. In Hungary it is a unique interactive experience that has so far been used by 500 users for more than 50 000 artwork views.

The relationship between art and self‑expression is also explored from a fresh perspective by METAMORPH (formerly Thinwood) SzemüvegSzabóság. Kis‑Varga Zsófia – Sophi talks about how a uniquely designed pair of glasses can become a personal statement in a world that is built on uniformity and mass production.

The event on 6 October is not a conventional press conference. Brief introductions are followed by questions, personal conversations and a walk‑through of the exhibition. Press representatives will meet young creators, some of whom are encountering an audience of this size for the first time – and others whose previous Godot Art Expo marked one of the first major milestones in their careers.
