A new exhibition by the Godot Institute pays tribute to the work of two towering figures in Hungarian contemporary painting, Miklós Szüts and Erzsébet Vojnich. The display concentrates on the second half of the legendary painter couple’s oeuvre, the pieces created after the regime change, from monumental oil canvases to smaller watercolours. Built upon a metaphysical tradition of painting, the works invite the visitor into a quiet, enigmatic world. We wander through streets, interiors and the labyrinth of roads that fade into obscurity, where the transcendent experience of absence and emptiness becomes even more palpable.
Szüts and Vojnich’s works signal the relentless fatigue of melancholic thought, presenting their inexhaustible quest in two consistent, clear‑cut bodies of work. The solemn, profound‑sounding pieces convey a world that keeps its concepts at arm’s length through their metaphorical visual language. Their art has been exhibited for audiences both domestic and abroad, and their output has been recognised with significant prizes. Artists deeply believing in humanity and the power of thought, who proclaim and live out these convictions, hold a singular, distinctive voice in the Hungarian visual arts scene. Their work is attractive not only for the high‑level technical execution of painting but also for its enigma. Their uncluttered visual realm invites viewers to true contemplation within the exhibition halls of the Godot Contemporary Arts Institute.
