The Godot Gallery cordially invites you.

Péter Ujházi

At the opening of the exhibition on 2009, on Sunday 18.30 in October 11.

Before that, on 16.00, Ujházi Péter's other exhibition opens at the Studio 1900 Gallery under the title Papírjaim.

During the Godot Gallery exhibition we will exhibit the artist’s latest boxes, paintings and collages, and a selection of his watercolour works.

Guardian protector, 50 x 65, watercolours, paper

Peter Ujházi’s work has earned him the prominent place he deserves; numerous commendations and writings about his art have appeared over the past decades, and his pieces line the museum inventory books. In 2000 a monograph of his work was published by art historian Marta Kovalovszky. Over the last forty years he has won many exhibition prizes, receiving the Munkácsy Award in 1987, and in 2004 he was honoured as Honoured Artist of the Hungarian Republic.

Kertész, 50x70, chalk, paper, 19989.

The life and more than thirty‑year artistic career of Péter Ujházi is linked to Székesfehérvár. He was born in that city on 1940 and returned there in 1966 after completing a painting degree at the Academy of Fine Arts. In his ironic, narrative painting, the chronicling of history and everyday life unfold simultaneously. His unique, multi‑perspective assemblages began to steer him toward assemblage in the mid‑seventies, toward the world of boxes, and in the eighties to collimated spatial paper works, to leporellos, before turning to sculpture in the nineties and producing grotesque ceramic panopticons. Ujházi, despite his fundamentally narrative artistic attitude, was always drawn to landscape painting. The Nadap foliage series is an impressionistic landscape diary that began at the end of the sixties and has continued to this day, its constant location and inspirational source being Nadap, a small village in the Velencei Mountains.

Bányató, 150×120, oil, canvas, 2009

Turista in the Vértes, 100 x 100 x 8, assemblage, 2006-2009

A cell‑shaded or a Kocsma scene, heroism or banality – Ujházi’s “surgical” style reveals the true face of things, often fleeting and despicable. Ujházi skilfully drags down, breaks apart, observes and tells, as only he can, what only he sees – from Nadap to New York to Budapest to Lisbon. Boxes, pyramids, administrative‑graphic prints, paper‑folds – all are a detail from the world, as if a stage play where the characters enact something from our life, and in the part there is always the whole. In his images he stretches, rotates and expands space, putting the figures into a special system of relations. This personal sense of space suddenly no longer fit in two dimensions, and the artist, in addition to painting, built boxes. In Ujházi’s oeuvre certain periods stand out, but the individual types or collections of works appear continuously, with minor omissions. In these the boxes, or the Nadap garden cycle.
