Claudia Tamási

for the opening of the exhibition titled ___
On 2006 November 15 at 20 o'clock
Opening: Klára Hudra, art historian
Tamási Claudia: Ajkaim XII. 2001
Pop‑art has delivered a visual rendering of the female mouth, treating it as a motif of sensuality, transgression and freedom. At the same time, the increasingly aggressive advertising culture has placed the female mouth among its chief visual media, presenting it as a spectacle. Another point of connection is a comparison with hyperrealism when viewing these paintings: mainly, Chuck Close’s painting style “ugrik be”. Claudia is more colourful, more playful, more lyrical – overall more flamboyant – although this sort of cartographic exploration is no stranger to her. From the blend of playful sensuality and a cold, investigative stare something emerges from her that is strikingly contemporary, distinctly feminine, austere, hard and emblematic.

Tamási Claudia: Fertilisation 2004
We can see that after painting everyday scenes and poses the painter continues to work on the picture, disturbs it, supplements it, or even erodes the seemingly perfect scene with smears and re‑painting. Initially unfamiliar materials are applied to the canvas surface – tubes of paint, melted plastic droplets, adhesive tape, or even fragments of eyelashes and eyeballs taken from toy dolls. These foreign elements become part of the composition, complement or even counterbalance the painted image, but in any case they expand the associative field of what is seen in the picture. At the same time they steer figurative images toward pictorial abstraction.

Tamási Claudia: Detail 2006
Despite the realistic portrayal of its objects and figures, the whole composition nevertheless detaches itself from reality, producing distinctly surrealist works. There is nothing special or noteworthy about the situation. Either we witness the immortalised, spontaneous, everyday moments, or we encounter the constructed piling up of ordinary objects and situations of female existence upon one another.
Andrea Bordács
The exhibition will be open until December 9 from Tuesday to Friday between 10 and 18, and on Saturday from 10 to 13.
