Szikszai will present two different series at the exhibition. On one hand the latest charcoal drawings, on the other a series of overprints, about which the artist has shared the following thoughts:
Correcting a catalogue
It is a fact that art – chiefly contemporary visual art – 70-80 percent ends up in the rubbish bin. Excess production can also be seen in this sector. While cleaning out a small graphic workshop in 2009, I found a catalogue in the garbage. I took it home, because I enjoy collecting. It sat with me for years, and then in a crash of 2015 the same catalogue slipped back into my hands. I began skimming through the reproductions of international artists listed in it (to me, they were very clichéd works), and then, out of the blue, I started correcting them. First only in my mind, then I set the task in motion. I tried to revive the pages, some works had to be re‑composed, I left certain motifs that I considered successful in some pieces, rewrote a tired, clichéd gesture, highlighted a blot, painted a new mark onto it, or, with overlays, elevated the old ones to the foreground, placing them in a new context so that they might live anew in the altered compositional space. There were also works that seemed terribly fragile to me; I removed them (not once, but in several layers) yet always left a bit of fragility, ensuring the original composition could still be re‑interpreted, proving that, you know, there is still hope…
In the end: I do not betray myself.
Apparently this series will also end up in the bin.
