From geometry here and beyond, or the twenty‑seven faces of abstraction. That could serve as the motto of the exhibition opening as the XIII event of the Godot Gallery’s Contemporary Self‑Collections series, which offers a glimpse into Lajos Barabás’s collection. The selection, spanning from the 1960s to the present, showcases works by individual Hungarian visual artists who follow various strict geometrical and constructive approaches, the 27, most of whom lead independent careers. Each “face” demonstrates a distinct individuality across a wide spectrum of pieces, ranging from precisely calculated architecture to more subjective, playful, lyrical abstraction that leaves more room for chance and the possible. In the exhibition, works that do not reach full abstraction but are firmly tied to figurativeness act as exciting points of comparison. Barabás, as a collector, insists that each work stands on its own, independent of the artist’s oeuvre, satisfying the demand for unity of content and form. Thus, in each other’s company they also provide a personal yet complete intersection of the diverse currents of abstraction.
