Gaál József produced yet another batch of scarred, skinned heads. Tearing and binding – themes that had appeared in his earlier works – re‑emerge here, but the wolf‑skull skins now convey the anguish of the subjugated man. Beauty and terror melt together; it is no longer an allegorical play but a portrait of the person left in himself. The drawings that accompany the sculptures are lyrical, personal notes that soften the singularity of the works. The exhibition’s supporting installations consist of pálinka bottles labelled with sketches and spirits sealed with twine, upon which the distressed figures seem to be drunken ghosts trapped in glass.
