The unsettling building of the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial was erected on the former slum of Sierra de Guadarrama. The Salak Monastery, quasi. Indefinite, grey mass; concentric mountains (sfumato), rock and conifer twine. Squirrels! The monarch who commissioned it (II. Philip) watched the construction from a nearby hill. Twenty‑one years – a strong experience could have been with time for this black‑clothed, vague figure. Master of the world, void – surely he would have finished the “vague figure” too. From there one looks instead of a fantastically rich, melancholy conceptual artist. His magnum opus, in its negative grandeur, stands as a baroque monument exorcised from itself, on a ridge, impervious, on the slovenly (loose) ground of memory. Three‑dimensional, walkable self‑portrait. Its silence makes it inaccessible; I do not even attempt it. I merely use this‑and‑that, I am thieving from it: I shuffle kittens, I twirl them around some thing (by me) called the unnamed.

Dániel András returns to the Godot Gallery with his latest works after a gap of two years. He does not deceive himself, and this time he creates something entirely new and unconventional, inspired by the Escorial and by its master, II. Philip. The technique itself is wholly unusual, for alongside paintings on wooden panels the visitor encounters graphics in which the artist places various visual planes into different spaces, and small, slender glass pieces are positioned between, in front of and behind them. The picture objects and panel works on display, built upon easily recognisable motif fragments from a distinct period in art history, speak, without irony, to the ambivalent relationship between reality and imagination, sign and meaning, work and creator.
