Still life

2002 January 16.

Dear Madam, Sir!

With great pleasure we invite you and your friends 2002 to the “Csendélet” exhibition at the Godot Gallery on 16 January at 20 o’clock. The exhibition is curated by Bognár Tünde and Kozák Gábor.

A. Nagy Gábor

At the Godot Gallery, the still lifes of contemporary painter 13 will be exhibited.

This, in terms of its age, is a very old – two thousand‑year‑old – quiet survivor of the revolutions of art. It has retained its popularity to this day; audiences happily peruse still lifes in museums or hang them in their own rooms. At auctions they appear as a safe bet, and indeed they often sell for the highest prices, reaching astronomical sums such as the 25 million‑dollar “Tea Kettle with Fruits” by Cézanne. It is unlikely that any artist has ever painted fewer than a handful of still lifes in their lifetime. In fact, the ordinary person first – and then, of course, last – runs into the problems of painting in the school drawing lesson, when they must paint that particular drapery, a corset. For artists, however, the practice of still‑life painting is all about the image itself, about the picture as a means of expression. For them the still life is a meditative object.

The works on display, on the one hand, cling to tradition—in their themes, techniques and depth—yet, on the other, they capture the visuality of contemporary life.

The exhibitors are: A. Nagy Gábor, Cseke Szilárd, Filp Csaba, Fuchs Tamás, Hajdú Kinga, Káldi Kata, Kovács Péter Balázs, Kő Virág, Makó Judit, Mészáros Szabolcs, Muzsnay Ákos, Nemere Réka, Páll Tibor Krisztián.

The exhibition can be viewed on weekdays between 10 and 18 until 22 February.
