About my work

Renátó Csabai

When I flip through an old photo album, I select the images that serve as themes for my work based on whether I can see, through them, a world that lurks beneath the surface of everyday life – a world I imagine to be cleaner, more valuable than the one we inhabit.

In our age, information and impressions pour into us from everywhere, and often people are forced to absorb them without the chance to select. Therefore I try to seek and present in my work a general reference point that anyone can build upon in this rapidly changing world, and I believe I can find that within each person. Even at university I mainly painted portraits, and to make my paintings feel even more alive and inhabited I sought transparent carriers. This endeavour came to fruition only in 2010 when I discovered the material that made it possible to render the dream‑like atmosphere I was striving to create, so that my portraits become more expressions of spirit than simple human representations.

I know that art cannot fundamentally change the world, but one of an artist’s tasks is to try to illuminate what a more valuable life looks like and that people should strive towards. This can only be achieved honestly if I do not simply adjust to circumstances, people’s weaknesses and my own faults, but instead strive to become a better person, and I can only hope that this is reflected in my work.
