Human pair, 2007

The Godot Gallery cordially invites you and your friends.

Bogdándy Sultan

for the opening of the first exhibition held in our gallery

2008 on the 4 of January at 20 o’clock.

The exhibition will be opened by Lajos Lóska, art historian.

City Fire, 2003

Bogdándy Szultán’s works are shocking, unsettling, almost brutal. Their power lies foremost in the use of material: “If you wish to avoid the harmony that arises in today’s pieces, a harmony which no longer exists in our age, you must incorporate organic materials into your work – prepared meat, mummified living beings, bone, etc. These are the materials that also rebuild our fleeting bodies, and thereby allow a connection with the existent.” – says the sculptor, who for almost a quarter of a century has been assembling his hard‑to‑categorise objects from animal‑derived body parts, found items, wood fragments, industrial waste, stones and broken glass in order to convey his visions of the world.

Field fire, 2003

Instead of pursuing decorative aesthetics, it appeals to the primary images and sensations evoked by the rough working of earth‑borne, organic raw materials, left in their natural “colourlessness” as a reality. The works displayed at the exhibition are occupied by human existence devoid of all idealisation. Its approach is both analytical and synthesising. The figure, pared down to its primary elemental forms, becomes a puppet‑like subservient to a greater, independently existing force, presenting the person themselves on the stage of life in a voodoo‑like manner. Playfulness is also present in the pieces, but these visions are as light‑hearted as the market games of earlier times, recalled by this box‑shaped theatricality. With the compactness of fables, the unfolding of stories sealed within individual images, drawing out the lessons awaits the observer.

Nagymogul és a méhei, 2007

The works can be viewed from Tuesday to Friday, between 10 and 18, until the 2 of February, and on Saturday between 10 and 13.
