On the occasion of Baksai József’s birthday 50 the Godot Gallery is organising a retrospective exhibition. The painter’s pastel‑coloured, tactile and touch‑stimulating surfaces give the impression of a landscape’s topography or of a relief sculpture. He achieves this effect with a distinctive technique of applying paint: on his large canvases he often applies thick oil paint, either by hand or with a brush (sometimes enriched with plexiglass), in a densely textured manner. In his pictorial practice he generally employs dark and earthy tones. He frequently draws on mythological subjects, or borrows from various cultural circles. He is inclined to think in series. Besides painting he creates mixed‑media works and graphics, employing a lightly glued technique. The retrospective is also thematic; the paintings and graphics on display are exclamations of transience and mortality.

The vanitas symbols, those fixed visual motifs, represent the fleeting nature of earthly life and the fragility of human existence. Examples are certain objects such as an hourglass, glass, withered flower, extinguished candle, etc. Likewise appear the skeleton and skull that symbolise the transience of the human body. These motifs are easily understood with a clear message. Yet the bones, the skeleton or the skull, besides death, also proclaim the promise of resurrection.

“The cranium is a bony framework found in many animals, providing the fundamental structure of the head. Organisms with a skull are called Craniata. It supports the facial structure and protects the brain from injury. Brain protection is only one of the important roles fulfilled by the bony skull. For instance, the fixed distance between the eyes is crucial for depth perception, while the fixed position of the ears helps the brain determine the direction and distance of sounds. The skull holds the teeth and the jaw, and in some species of mammals (such as certain hoofed animals) it serves a defensive function, with horns attaching to the frontal bone.”
