The Ericsson Fine Arts Gallery

and the Godot Gallery invites you

22 June 2004 – Emese Bács, painter

for two exhibitions that can be viewed concurrently

At the Ericsson Fine Arts Gallery, the opening will take place on 16.30, hosted by art writer Hemrik László, while at the Godot Gallery it will open at 18, hosted by Dr Máriás. We warmly invite you to join us for an afternoon full of programme.

In the Mirror

The contemporary image of humanity is undeveloped. I believe that even today there exist the types and personalities characteristic of our era, which express the contradictions of human existence. I transform and incorporate the experiences of real life into my work, condensing what I have felt into dreamlike, symbolic compositions.

I feel that the depiction of the human is currently the biggest challenge in painting. For me, mastering the traditions of painting is essential to articulate and express my sense of the world in an appropriate form. Thus, I shape my understanding of painting around the conventional visual solutions of modernity.

My works explore the loneliness and alienation of individuals living within the metropolitan civilisation of our time. I aim for my paintings to be realistic while still being self‑expressive. Using simple, stylised forms as building blocks, I create preparatory studies, sketches and replicated graphic sheets for each piece, and I also craft “clay‑situations.”

My painting style relies on strong light–shadow contrasts and on blocky, solid forms. The sculpturally formed empty spaces and the unconventional perspective echo Italian metaphysical painting. My role models are Mario Sironi, Ottone Rosai, Carlo Carrà and De Chirico.

Through the front door

For me, the avant‑garde produced in the 1910s forms part of the transferable tradition of visual construction. My framing experiments, using the tools of painting, are closely linked to the principles of collage and montage. On the surface of the picture I paint letters and numbers whose meaning is personal, yet I also use the visual world created by consumer culture as raw material, turning its banal pictorial tropes around with an ironic, critical edge. Sorompó

Morandi asserts this: "(…) everyday matters work upon our souls so beneficially that through this we can find ourselves in a state of grace. Those who omit them fall into absurdity and into nothingness both in spirit and in their works (...) the everyday things point out the ways in which simplicity speaks of a higher quality of existence, and at the same time the forms that create the whole mysterious splendour of art (...) and since we have not been conditioned to do anything else but to express ourselves through signs, we turn our spirits towards this calm, poetic essence, leaving the fools with the deluded dream of the marvelous."

The exhibition at the Ericsson Visual Arts Gallery will be open until July 23, on weekdays from 8 to 17.

The exhibition at Godot Gallery is open until July 10 and can be seen from Tuesday to Friday between 10 and 18, and on Saturday between 10 and 13.
