János Kádár on the trópus with the director of the Gagarin Power Plant.

I fairly well know the Aligai Party activist, and I often went there in the 2000s. By then the famous, and architecturally speaking progressive, Kádár Villa had become an abandoned pile of ruins. Yet Aliga still preserved that special atmosphere created by those in power along the shore of the Balaton in the socialist decades. I know Aliga, and I lived in the 70s, I was a pioneer, I clearly remember the day when Brezsnyev died. But I do not claim to know more about this corridor than my own memories. The memories are misleading: we were young then, and we tend to remember only the good.

After the gunner's clock

I received my first portrait commission from the nursery teacher, who asked me to sketch János Kádár. At home my parents went off, and it was the first time I felt on my own skin that there are two realities – the domestic one, and the institutionalised world. We must behave, beware what we say. My generation experienced the looser years of the Kádár era, but the real horrors are only known through our parents or the textbooks. We too stood at the border for hours, watching the guards sift through the VHS tapes we had bought in Vienna one by one, so that we would not bring illegal films into the country, yet these petty matters are dwarfed by the oppressive, intolerant world in which our grandparents and parents spent a large part of their lives. I have 15 years left under socialism, and this exhibition would certainly not have come about had I not been born in 74. The Aligari idyll and the absurd power interweave with a puritan silence beside the 70‑es 80‑as years of the Balaton. Greetings from Aligáról – we have already been there, so you need not. – Weiler Péter
