Verebics Ágnes: Csürdöngölö, oil on canvas 100 x 70 cm 2025

Wunderkammer, or wonder room, is one of humanity’s oldest attempts to summarise the world – a place where order and chaos, nature and imagination meet. The collection of I. Ferdinánd in Ambras Castle during the sixteenth century reflected the period’s peculiar worldview: specimens, deformities, tiny monsters fashioned from bone and coral, furry people, bizarre relics, and the imprints of unknown bodies. Ágnes Verebics’s own Wunderkammer is a contemporary mirror of these ideas – an inner, psychological anthology where the terrible and the fragile, the grotesque and the beautiful all find their place.

This exhibition is both an extended self‑portrait and a collection space. For more than twenty years Verebics has been a passionate flea‑market collector, amassing oddities and tiny, forgotten objects that are then transformed – gaining new life as paintings, sculptures, strands and rusted artefacts. Every piece is a fragment: a body fragment, a memory fragment, an abandoned detail, where personal and collective mythologies intertwine.

Agnesc Verebics: Csipke gallér – oil on canvas 90 × 90 cm 2025

In the images and objects the human’s demonic, beastly side vibrates, yet never directly, rather beneath the surface. Here horror does not appear, but becomes felt: as melancholy, anxiety, the slow pulsing of trembling. These works therefore awaken in us not terror but a kind of familiar restlessness – a feeling like encountering our own inner eccentricities.

In the world of the “Wunderkammer”, order is born from disorder. Every little thing—a strand of hair, a fragment—serves as a possible memory, a released energy linked to the body, desire and transience. The works of Verebics Ágnes therefore hover at the boundary between collecting and self‑knowledge: a museum of the soul, where every object poses a single question—what do we keep from ourselves, and what do we let go?
