Short listing
Lázár Tibor Vitamin, protein, kokain című kiállítása a szabadkai Raichle-palota szecessziós, impozáns terei után most a Godot Labor indusztriális terében kerül bemutatásra.
Full exhibition text
Lázár Tibor’s exhibition entitled “Vitamin, Protein, Cocaine”, after having opened in the Art Deco, impressive halls of Raichle Palace in Szombathely, will now be showcased in the industrial space of Godot Labor. The Serbia‑born artist, following studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Novi Sad and at Switzerland’s L’École Cantonale d’Art du Valais, has taken part in a number of solo and group shows, including in Canada, Germany, Serbia, Switzerland and Hungary.
In his work he blends the marks of different ages, visual cultures, high art and pop art, thereby exposing the sharp fault lines that cut through our East‑European past and present. His exhibition “Vitamin, protein, kokain” revives the ambience of the region’s golden age under monarchy. The exaggerated prosperity of the uneventful peace times masks horror and existential dread, revealing the superficial sheen of that era’s brilliance. The symbols of the increasingly affluent civil middle class appear in paintings and objects: endless, abundant feasts, exotic animals, and snuffs, which have been transformed from aristocratic status symbols into mass‑produced items, yet still retain their supposed rarity.
Tibor Lázár’s paintings feature idealistic, almost statue‑like childlike forms that appear simultaneously ruined and immaculate, uniting victims and aggressors into a single figure, with a brutality reminiscent of medieval saintly portraits. Works that also draw on vanitas still‑life iconography and memento mori imagery live with cynicism and social critique, confronting the myths of happiness that have shaped our past and present.
At the same time as the exhibition, the Godot ICA also shows Wirth Abigail Hinni and Labrosse Dániel’s True Stories exhibition.
