An influential contemporary thinker’s impressive responses to contemporary art and to the environment that shapes our everyday lives, and which inspires artists to create. At the forthcoming eighteenth exhibition in the Godot Gallery series, a selection will be presented from Simó György’s collection. The exhibition is part of the long‑running Contemporary Personal Collections series that has been running for several years.
We have already seen several pieces from György Simó’s collection at domestic and international thematically‑led exhibitions, but this will be the first show where the collection itself takes centre stage. The exhibition will present a representative selection from the most exciting works in the collection.

György Simó did not begin buying art with a deliberate concept of building a collection; he bought out of love for art. The expansion of the collection has never been driven by arguments or prices, but by emotional impulses. These emotions have also led him into the world of contemporary painting: this is where he draws the most energy from, and he feels closest to it. With works that reflect the present world he can truly empathise and exist alongside them. The backbone of the collection consists of contemporary domestic pieces, with a smaller part of international works. In addition to paintings, photographic works play a significant role, even some posters. By browsing through roughly a quarter of the photo collection in the collection, we come across special, “vintage” pieces such as photographs by Escher Károly, Bara István, Szőllősy Kálmán or Kaczur Pál, which are reinforced by works acquired from contemporary photographers such as Szabó Dezső, Szacsva y Pál, or the internationally best‑known Muntadas, featuring one or another piece.
The exhibition’s and the collection’s uniqueness is partly due to the consistently high quality of the works, and also because, although largely formed from ad hoc purchases and continually building upon itself, it results in a complex yet harmonious overall picture arising from the collector’s personality.
