At the Godot Gallery the works of efZámbó István, better known and often called “Öcsi,” from both his earlier and more recent periods are on display. This unfettered selection suits the artist’s spirit well, as it does not focus solely on the newest pieces; efZámbó’s career transcends fleeting trends, presenting a cohesive body of work. The pieces are timeless, even when they are not showcased as part of a survey exhibition yet are reunited for the public’s appreciation.
Within the Dadaist‑Surrealist universe, efZámbó István is characterised by a frivolous and ironic style that builds upon associations and creates an inner logic in each of his works. Recurrent, established motifs—such as the distinctive spotted ball, the heart, the house, the skull, the fish or the watering can—seem to have a clear meaning, yet they are always cast in a different light against the other details that appear in the works. The dreamlike, loosely constructed composition balances the relationship between colours and forms, contrasting the profusion of motifs that cluster together in a haphazard manner.
As a founder of the Szentendre‑based Vajda Lajos Studio, representing both artistic resistance and withdrawal, and as a defining figure of progressive art, he still creates playful and untethered works today in painting, graphics, sculpture, performance, music and poetry. He described his work and that of his colleagues as follows: “I would like to awaken thoughts in viewers that even I cannot think of.”
