The Godot Gallery warmly invites you
x‑T – Nagy Kriszta
the fifty‑six‑year‑old
for the exhibition titled
Opening: 2010 September 14 at 20
Available for viewing until October 16.
We will showcase Nagy Kriszta’s paintings created this year and two new prints at the exhibition.
The Godot presents, Andy Warhol! No. Basquiat! No. Godot introduces Krista Nagy’s x‑T exhibition, titled Fifty‑Six, where she reproduces Basquiat images – albeit severely, because she lacks funds for equipment – and authenticates them with her own signature. Jean‑Michel Basquiat is not truly known in Hungary, so he remains a worldwide star, and he would be 50 this year had he not already died at the age of 28, a fact that did not stop him from creating 3000 unique works and from keeping his paintings’ “square‑metre price” – a term that does not exist in the art‑trade lexicon – from slipping below 20 million Ft. On 1985 September 14 the pair opened an exhibition together with Andy, and on 2010 September 14 in Budapest Krista Nagy joins the lads. In Warhol’s spirit and by multiplying the works of his friend, x‑T fights for artistic freedom not by repeating himself but by echoing Basquiat. She does not paint “magnificent” artworks as expected of her, but instead reproduces Basquiat’s. Why not? Perhaps it is forbidden? Perhaps stealing is forbidden in this country? Krista Nagy steals Basquiat images and sells them in the cheap, 20 million‑Ft market, offering their square metre. Small, original pieces are for sale from as little as 56 thousand Ft at the Godot Gallery! The lot consists of 56 pieces.
In celebration of Basquiat’s fiftieth birthday, large and smaller exhibitions of his work have opened and are opening in many places around the world, including New York and Paris. Hungary is an exception. Perhaps then 56 years later. The artist also addresses this and other unfortunate issues related to our country through remixing Basquiat images.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 10 to 18; Saturday 10 to 13.
