The biggest difference between the old exhibition and this one is the intention. Back then, those works were exhibited as cautionary examples; now we present them as examples to follow. Back then, every artist was included against their will; now most are happy to be here, and we have requested only a few works from private collections. Back then, the exhibition was held in a large state museum; this one is in a small private gallery. That one was in Munich, this one is in Budapest; that one was organised by the state, while this one is the result of a handful of people’s determination. And that was a different era from the one we live in now.

The installation will be similar: we too will deliberately hang the pictures very densely, almost overlapping, but whereas the old exhibition used this to demean them, we simply want to make the experience even more intense.

We are not waiting to be put in the pillory; we are stepping out into the open of our own accord.

Let us look at whose work we have exhibited and whose we have not:

Not those who paint trapeziums, stripes, squares, parallelograms and ovals in azure blue, Naples yellow and beige, producing soulless office decoration without the slightest genuine creative intent.

Nor the clowns who make children’s book illustrations, whose sole motivation as they work is that one of them has managed to attain the most sacred goal: the greatest financial success for the least possible effort.

Nor works created around an incoherent, contrived concept that is not reflected in the works themselves, in reality solely so that the event description includes all the buzzwords that the confused, conformist artist considers trendy and current, expecting a pat on the back in return.

We said no to works born of cold calculation and to biomorphically inspired cuteness. And to every other kind of cuteness too.

Of those we have invited, we dare to say that they have souls, that they dare to live, to die, to make statements, sometimes to be different, to be in love, to make love, to miscarry, to mock, to laugh wildly, to be mad, to be sad and to be critical, even of themselves.

They dare to depict emotions and real events, to put black on their palettes too, to create without justification or lengthy explanations.

They do not see art as a science, nor regard it as a doctrine or task to be justified and proven, but as a mystery in which one must sometimes accept that there is no solution, only what one sees. Their art is not a sociological or psychological fiction, but a screen onto which they project their innermost selves, forever searching for ways of expression.

“They are serious, but not self-serious.”

They have imagination and are not afraid to immerse themselves in it; they can turn the anger and passion within them into creative energy.

News about their art is not limited to whatever new auction record someone has manipulated for them.

They are the ones casual buyers avoid because they are too “harsh”, too “unsettling”. The ones even collectors are afraid to touch. The ones whose work a husband chooses, only for the purchase to be abandoned two days later at his wife’s request, for the sake of family peace. The ones who have no chance of entering a corporate or bank collection, because their presence in the acquisitions portfolio would be impossible to explain.

We are putting on this exhibition because we fear that these artists are slowly dying out, and we are now at the very last moment!

We apologise to those friends whom we have not invited because of a lack of space!

The exhibition is open until 11 May, Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 14:00 and Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00.
