Antiglamour series 10
In the past two years I have been thinking about images as a photo editor. The Antiglamúr series is about that period. Boundaries blur; you only see the angle in the charcoal sketch, or simply the prose that the picture would illustrate is ungraspable: there is no need for conformity here. In photographs someone is always watching. Some characters slip into the background, others shoulder or might shoulder the spotlight. It is worthwhile to begin along the tension between these two kinds of responsibility. The photographs were taken in Ukraine, Belgium, Lithuania, Kosovo and Hungary. — Erdei Krisztina
Krisztina Erdei’s internationally recognised photography was among the finalists for the Paris Photo prize in 2010. Her sharp wit and clever cultural analysis casts our everyday circumstances and situations in a fresh light. We think and feel in a similar way during the communication work that reshapes our surroundings; we appreciate when a deep philosophy lies behind creativity and courage. Erdei Kriszta’s images are thought‑provoking and striking: the joke sits in silence, never shouts. They have a punch, yet they are not easy to knock down. This inspires us in our everyday lives. Kriszta sometimes captures a bizarre organic coexistence, other times she creates it herself; surprise never fades. Each of Kriszta’s photographs has a story; the where and when of the shoot matter, as the spirit of the place manifests itself. It would be a mistake to underestimate what lies in what the centre calls the periphery. The contemporary sense of life in these photographs is not expressed through the sterile cosmopolitanism of iconic sites but through the perhaps absurd local montage of tucked‑away places, crowned by modest local victories. He analyses and loves. He criticises, but does not judge. He notices the locally distorted translations that seem absurd through a globalised gaze but does not mock: he makes them seen.
