Dr Máriás

II. Elizabeth secretly consults Maria Geronazzo about the policy of the eastern opening in the Special 2014 National Park.

The exhibition titled ___ is opened by Károly Gerenda, the art collector and chief organiser of the Sziget Festival, and then Attila Bognár, head of the A38 Boat, will present the album titled ___ by Bálint Szombathy Dr. Máriás.

Viktor's grave

At Dr Máriás’s Christmas exhibition everything is about love. It speaks of how we constantly lack it, search for it, find it, misunderstand it, then lose it, forget it, hide it, drive it away, only to discover it again and again, even behind the veils of hatred and misunderstanding, for we need immeasurable love and the understanding that flows from it if we are to remain normal and to live. What did the artist employ as didactic examples in this latest opus? The most striking thing perhaps is that he presents us this time with large‑scale landscapes in which the Hungarian countryside appears both dreamlike and fertile, as well as mysterious and swamplike, with familiar and fantastical figures stepping onto the scene at once, much like the stunning scenes of an ever‑present dream broadcast assembled from these very elements. In the Nemzeti Park, the landscapes painted in the Mártely marsh form the basis of these pictures, where on one side the English queen rows, and on the other an unknown woman searches for her face.

Aczél György warns in Dubuffet's studio.

In addition, of course we can also enjoy the latest chapter of portraits of unexpected figures appearing in the styles and studios of a range of world‑famous painters – among them Szanyi Tibor, Egon Schiele, Orbán Viktor Roy Liechtenstein, Kim Dzson, Un Mark Rothko, Ratko Mladics and Ferenc pápa Fernand Léger, Zámbó Jimmy Toulouse‑Lautrec, Aczél György Dubuffet – all set within the studio. Social criticism, art criticism and self‑criticism together are aimed at holding a mirror before ourselves in which, in a different, unusual, astonishing and revealing way, we can see our position in the world. That while we painfully acknowledge, liberatively rise, and, through art, by means of its images and message, we can make it more digestible, more tolerable and better.

The exhibition 2014 is open until January 4. During that time there is a Christmas break from December 23 to January 1. Open between 9 and 14 from Tuesday to Friday, and between 10 and 13 on Saturday.

About the album:

Szombathy Bálint: drMáriás – a visual arts album in Hungarian and English, 280 pages, with more than 350 coloured reproductions, published by K. Petrys and distributed by Alexandra.

the cover of the book titled drMáriás

Dr Máriás Béla undertakes an impressive album to present three decades of his painting activity, ranging from the uniquely special works of the hitherto little‑known New‑Hungarian period to the political portraits of recent years that have sparked great acclaim, showcasing his extraordinarily exciting and rich creative career. Szombathy Bálint has followed Dr Máriásʼ work closely since the mid‑eighties, so his study offers both professional depth and, from the perspective of a compatriot who has lived through the historical storms, refined poetic highlands. In addition to the Hungarian and English‑language study presenting this distinctive artistic opus, it also highlights the genre diversity of the artist’s creative labour. The more than 350 coloured reproductions are displayed dynamically as a “comic book”, revealing the key motifs of Dr Máriásʼ painting from which the internal development of his oeuvre, its step‑by‑step maturation, and its thoughtful and regenerating shift of view can be clearly read.

The album will be available on site at a discounted price.
