Opening: 2019 September 5 at 19.
Opening: Benedek Szurcsik, philosopher, who already addressed the audience at the gallery’s opening event, and whose paths have repeatedly crossed with the gallery’s since the opening of Godot.
In this year, the 20‑year‑old Godot Gallery took part in one of the major events of the festive season, the gallery’s jubilee exhibition. From this occasion we presented the following selection: we organised an exhibition that features only the seven artists with whom the gallery is currently working. By name: Bukta Imre, drMáriás, feLugossy László, Gaál József, Nagy Kriszta, Szikora Tamás, Ujházi Péter. In contrast to the practice adopted locally, Godot cooperates with far fewer artists, because we feel that in this way we can devote far more attention to them and focus on them more intensely.
The exhibition material was chosen in an entirely democratic manner, so that each artist is represented by four works. We sought to create a miniature biography exhibition within these limited constraints, selecting pieces from the artists’ most important periods in accordance with their multi‑decadal oeuvres. The show’s peculiarity is that it includes only works that are now held in major private collections.
We have always regarded the future‑oriented impact of our work as of paramount importance, continually seeking ways to align ourselves with causes that can leave a lasting imprint. In line with that idea we have paid great attention to our relationships with public collections and museums. We are fortunate to find that the output of our artists has, over the decades, not only stirred the interest of countless private collectors but has also become a significant part of professional discourse, and even beyond that, has entered the museum canon. Consequently, it is a great pleasure that our exhibition is being supported by the Ferenczy Museum and Art Centre in Szentes, the City Gallery – Kiscelli Museum in Budapest, and the St Stephen the King Museum in Székesfehérvár, each of which has lent a work to the show.
