Katalin Andrea Gulyás

Tight situation

Opening on 2022 September 7 at 18.

Opening: Uszkay Tekla, art historian

Open: from Tuesday to Friday until October 8 from 10 to 14, on Saturday between 10 and 13.

The “Stifled Situation” refers simultaneously to a personal inner state and to the global changes and trends we have all observed. The two are naturally interlinked: external anxiety creates inner tension. The events of recent years (pandemic, war, economic crisis…) have turned these experiences into a collective one, the psychic reflection of which we barely recognise. Confronting and acknowledging the stifled situation is important. Andrea Katalin Gulyás has chosen for this a playful yet metaphorical mode of representation, which nevertheless conveys the seriousness and severity of the circumstance. This duality also appears in the contrast between surreal material scenes and the precision of the depiction. The recurring motifs – various playthings such as a water pistol, a ball, a chessboard – play the same role in her work as they do in children’s lives: they model adult reality without a sense of danger. Here we understand better what it refers to, much like Gulyás Andrea Katalin’s series depicting flashbulbs. This brutal tool is what best describes the uncertainty, sneakiness and oppressive atmosphere of our everyday lives. In the exhibition, paintings and installations together present a further raw portrayal of our shared reality through their honesty and immediacy.

Gulyás Andrea Katalin completed her studies in visual representation at Eszterházy Károly College, Egri, in 2012, and later earned a master's degree in Visual and Environmental Culture Teaching at 2016. In 2022 she won the country’s most prestigious award for young artists for the third time, the Derkovits Gyula Fine Arts Scholarship. In 2021 she was honoured with the Mazsaroff Award. Her current exhibition is the outcome of winning the Godot Art Fair top prize in 2019. She has been a member of the Godot Labor artists’ collective since 2020.
